# Entities

> The map, its controls, and a sensor for each element of it.

| Entity | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Live map** (image) | The rendered map |
| **Live map** (camera) | The same map as a camera, for cards that need one. Disabled by default |
| **Update map** (switch) | Pauses and resumes automatic updates |
| **Force map update** (button) | Updates the map now |
| **Is map empty** (binary sensor) | Whether the last map came back empty |
| Positions, rooms, paths, zones, walls and obstacles (sensors) | One sensor for each element of the map |

## How often the map updates

The map is fetched every 10 seconds while the vacuum is working, and a few more times after it stops. Turn **Update map** off to stop fetching altogether, and press **Force map update** for one fetch on demand.

On the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum S20+, a map or path that has not changed since the last update is drawn again rather than downloaded again. With Xiaomi Home installed, the robot's position moves more often than that; see [With Xiaomi Home](/home-assistant/robot-vacuum-map/configuration.md#with-xiaomi-home).

## Showing it on a dashboard

The image entity works in a picture entity card. The camera entity is there for cards written for a camera, such as upstream's vacuum map cards; enable it from the entity's settings first.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The blueprints in the repository's `blueprints/` folder are upstream's, written for its earlier YAML camera, and have not been checked against the **Update map** switch.
